VT1282 - Unable to Install QNX Momentics

Problem
The following issues have been reported when trying to install QNX Momentics on the VL-686-2s STD Bus CPU board running BIOS 4.3.xxx:
- CDROM booting not supported
- IDE DMA mode doesn't work
- Serial Mouse not detected properly (causes mouse and keyboard to fail)
Solution
Hardware Setup
- Attach a 3.5" Floppy Drive to the floppy drive cable.
- Attach an IDE Hard Drive to the IDE cable. Jumper the drive as a master.
- Attach an IDE CDROM Drive to the IDE cable. Jumper the drive as a slave.
- Attach a serial mouse to COM2
CMOS Setup
- Reset CMOS Setup values to factory default
- Declare IDE 0 as AUTOCONFIG LBA
- Set DRIVE C as IDE 0
- Set BOOT 1ST = DRIVE A
- Set BOOT 2ND = DRIVE C
Create a non-DMA Momentics Boot Floppy
- Insert the Momentics 6.2.1A Installation CDROM into your desktop Windows PC.
- Insert a blank floppy disk into your desktop PC
- The CDROM will automatically start. Close the dialog box. Important: Do not select "Create Boot Floppy".
- Open up a DOS command shell
- Switch to the root directory of your CDROM drive (typically D:\)
- Type
QMAKEDSK INSTFLOP.DAT A:
- Press OK when prompted to insert a blank floppy disk into the drive
Installing the Operating System
- Insert the non-DMA Momentics Boot Floppy into the floppy drive on the VL-686-2s target system
- Insert the Momentics 6.2.1A CDROM into the CDROM drive on the VL-686-2s target system
- Boot the system from the floppy
- Press F3 to install QNX to a new disk partition
- Press F1 to continue
- Press F1 to accept the EULA
- Press F2 to keep the QNX partition below 8.4G
- Press F3 to select quarter 4774M
- Eject the floppy disk
- When machine reboots
- Press ESC to select .altboot
- Press SPACE to input boot options
- Press F1 to access the safe modes menu
- Press F3 to prevent photon from starting
- Press ENTER to continue booting
- Login as root. (No password is required)
Fix the DMA IDE problem
- Type
mv /.boot /.boot.bak
- cp /.altboot /.boot
Fix the Serial Mouse problem
· cp /usr/bin/ph /usr/bin/ph.bak
· mkdir /tmp
· vi /usr/bin/ph
· Search for the 1st instance of "inputtrap start".
· /inputtrap start
· Replace "inputtrap start" with "devi-hirun kbd fd -d/dev/kbd msoft fd -d /dev/ser2"
· The line should read:
phin -TPK -q && devi-hirun kbd fd -d/dev/kbd msoft fd -d /dev/ser2
· Write the changes to disk and exit (ESC :W :Q)
Reboot the system and let the OS installation complete naturally
· shutdown
Default Momentics Boot Floppy Doesn't Work
If you try to boot the system using a regular (DMA Mode) Momentics boot floppy, the following error message will appear and the system will hang:
Hit Esc for .altboot.......................................
Press the space bar to input boot options...
Can't locate PNP bios (No error)
Detected EIDE. Scanning for devices.
/.diskroot file for root not found on any filesystem.
Starting with safe mode
Unable to locate fs-pkg
NaN
