Consisting of a portable core machine and a disposable treatment kit, the machine moves fluids by alternating positive and negative pressure applied to a sorbent suspension in the dialyzer. The dialysis cycle begins by applying negative pressure to the sorbent suspension, which expands the membrane packages, pulling blood in from the patient. To complete the cycle, positive pressure is applied to the sorbent suspension, returning treated blood to the patient and filling the dialyzer with fresh sorbent from the sorbent bag. A customized VersaLogic STD 32 Bus CPU card provides the heart of the control system. It controls the unique hydraulic functions allowing blood to move counter-currently on the inside of a sorbent membrane. Continuous measurement to help ensure precise patient weight control over long treatment time periods and sophisticated sensors to monitor blood flow, membrane integrity and to detect bubbles in the blood is carried out by the STD 32 Bus system.
